What is Enchanting in Minecraft?

Enchanting in Minecraft is a game mechanic that allows a player to improve weapons, armor, and tools in the game. These enchantments are improvements that can buff the player’s combat or mining abilities or enhance various other experiences in Minecraft.

Each enchantment on a player’s item increases its level of power, such as increasing the strength of the weapon. A higher enchantment level allows the item to either perform its improved tasks with greater efficiency, or combine multiple enchantments to be more versatile.

The first written record of enchanting in Minecraft appears in the original Minecraft BETA 1.9 Pre-release 3 of late September 2011 where the Enchanting feature was added to the game. Since that time, the development team at Mojang Studios (now part of Microsoft) has steadily expanded the types of items and enchantments available in the game

How to Enchant Items in Minecraft?

To enchant items in Minecraft, you need to have an Enchanting Table and Experience Points (XP), the latter of which is gained through killing mobs and eating stuff. Once you have the two requirements, these are the steps you need to follow to enchant an item in Minecraft.

1. Get the Enchanting Table ready: Craft an enchanting table using 2 diamonds, 4 obsidian blocks, and 1 book.
2. Get the XP ready: You will need at least 1 XP level to enchant your item, the maximum will depend on the enchant level you choose.
3. Visit the Lapis Lazuli market: Find 3-15 Lapis Lazuli, one of the rarest minerals in the game to utilize the enchant table. You can choose between making one block of Lapis ore and mining it with a pickaxe or smelting Iron and Gold to find the ore.
4. Use the Enchanting Table.

Once the above is done, adhere to these steps to enchant in Minecraft.

1. Drag and drop the item to be enchanted in the left box of the enchanting menu. You can also click on the intended item and place it in the new box if using a mobile or pen platform version.
2. Open the menu to view the possible enchantments for the item. Since the options are randomly generated, you can exit and re-enter the table interface to get new enchanting options as necessary.
3. Drag the Lapis lazuli in the right slot.
4. Click or tap in the right-center box to enchant the item. Modifications will be made to its properties. The enchantment of the item is identified by a level number that appears when the item is hovering over.
5. Remove the newly enchanted item from the enchanting box to complete the process.

Obtaining an Enchantment Table

To enchant items in Minecraft, you start by obtaining an enchantment table. An enchantment table is obtained by crafting it in a crafting table using 4 obsidian blocks, 2 diamonds, and 1 book. As of version 1.18.9 of Minecraft, the player must use a diamond or netherite level pickaxe to mine obsidian so it can be collected. Obsidian, one of the more durable blocks in the game, is formed when water touches a source of lava that is above block Y-6 in any biome or below sea level in the Nether. Obsidian is the only block that does not get consumed when it is used to create the enchantment table.

To use Lapis Lazuli to enchant an item in Minecraft, a minimum of 15 are required to enchant an item. Lapis Lazuli is collected by mining blocks of lapis lazuli ore. Lapis lazuli ore is usually found at higher elevations, primarily on block levels 0-31. The block is reasonably common and generates frequently in veins. Each block of lapis lazuli ore drops a minimum of 4 lapis lazuli when mined. It’s a key part of the enchanting process and a blue dye.

In older versions of Minecraft, if the player did not have an enchanting room, then they could build a frame around their enchanting table using bookshelves up to 2 blocks high by 5 blocks wide by 4 blocks long. This would increase the efficiency of their enchanting table to utilize their experience points more effectively. As of version 1.9, such a frame is no longer needed in the game. One enchantment table is sufficient to utilize the full potential of bookshelves in enchanting, and no more benefits are gained by creating such frames around the enchanting table.

Once you have an enchanting table in your possession, you can employ it over and over to attempt enchants until you find one you like.

Be aware that enchanting in Minecraft has some randomness to it. Each time that an item is enchanted, a random enchant will be chosen to display for the item. There is also an element of randomness to the level of power and cost the enchantment will have. To overcome the randomness and select that particular enchantment that is most useful to you, and to ensure it does not have enchantments on it that you do not desire, you should be prepared to try a number of times to get exactly what you want. Keep your goal in mind and hold on to diamonds or netherite for tools or armor and for lapis lazuli to help you get a lucky enchantment.

The following are approximate probabilities to make the thought process a bit more tangible. During an enchantment session at an enchanting table, the average number of enchantments that can be tried on a single item will be 12. This average changes with each level of experience that the player has (the more experience you have, the higher level of enchantment can be selected). The probabilities of each number of enchantments until any of them catches an intention (let’s say an enchantment compatible with tools) are as follows:

2. 2 enchant: 23.63%
3. 3 enchant: 20.02%
4. 4 enchant: 15.33%
5. 5 enchant: 9.94%
6. 6 enchant: 5.58%
7. 7 enchant: 2.64%

There is also a randomness and variation in the costs of enchantment. The cost of enchantment can be as low as 1-2 and as high as 30 levels. The player may discard the option to pay these costs which are presented to them to refresh the enchantment table. There is no stable pattern to predict which items can be enchanted with high costs vs low costs, so gamers can refresh the table as many times as they wish, repeating the process to see if they can come up with an item which has an enchantment that both they desire and has a lower cost.

Some minor magic can take place when using Lapis Lazuli for enchanting. Each level to 3 and 30 on the enchantment table has a certain color which is beyond the game’s normal expectations. This is typically a greenish-blue color that is very pretty to view.

Lastly, bookshelves are a good way to enhance the power of enchants. Placing a series of bookshelves around an enchanting table is an available feature that adds more enchantment possibilities and enhances the enchanting process. Multiple bookshelves can be placed on each side of the enchanting table, up to two blocks away. Each additional bookshelf adds 2 levels of possible enchantment to the item that is being enchanted. So, if the gamer is going for a level 30 enchantment, they will need at least 15 bookshelves arranged in this manner to reach level 30. Any more bookshelves after that point will not help enchanting any further.

Hidden enchantments on tools and armor are a little more common. When an enchantment is used frequently by a player, it will increase the chances of the enchantment appearing on an item. Minecraft has a statistical system known as a ‘seed’ that can be manipulated to determine the chances of an enchantment being linked to an item. When an item is re-enchanted to refresh the enchantment or come up with an entirely new enchantment, Minecraft uses that prior enchantment history to anticipate what the player might want. If a player does not achieve the intended enchantment on his item on the first try, they will get the intended enchantment on the next try once they refresh the enchantment table multiple times.

There are various methods to enhance equipment in Minecraft to have more powerful attacks. Every way except enchantment has a lower level of effectiveness.

Cleaving and looting are mine-classic enchantments, the best choice for leveling, killing enemies, farming for items, and so on. They are best-enhanced axes that can give damage to two enemies at the same time.

The fastest way to grow plants is to plant them. Some of them are little more in-depth and are more fun to explore strategies.

Facing the wall: The player will plant a block of farmland and then face a mountain wall. This comes in handy for farm equipment and in particular the harvesting of grain. The steps to take if you want to face the wall in order are: the first step is to punch and destroy the block of farmland, the second is to turn 180 degrees with the mountain to your front and touch and plant the farmland again.

Order these steps:

1. Face the mountain and dig out the hoe.

2. Go to the front of the farmland and touch the wall of the mountain.

3. Hoe the soil so that it needs to be better.

4. To get the plant blocks, you must punch and destroy them.

Strengthening armor: To improve the armor, players must craft a totem of undying. This totem activates the moment the players die either by the hand of a hostile mob or because they fell off a cliff. The totem of undying will prevent the player from dying by instantly causing nearby items (including armor) to repair and gain strength. This is a very useful way of enhancing and repairing the armor that players wear consistently throughout the game. Even totems which are damaged or repaired will be recharged.

Gathering Experience Points

You can enchant in Minecraft by gathering experience points. Enchanting gear, tools, weapons, and armor is only possible leaving the safe zone of your sheltered part of the world and going out into the dark. You must face mobs and monsters like zombies or monsters, and overcome them to gather experience points. Killing these mobs will sometimes yield the special item known as Ender Pearl. More useful at this early stage of enchantment is a mob with the innocuous name of the Turtle. Killing turtles in Minecraft yields 1-3 experience points, which allows a player to move up the experience levels required for enchantment gradually. For example, to enchant a diamond tool or armor a user needs 3-7 experience points which require killing the turtle 1 to 3 times depending on how many experience points the turtle yields.

Placing the Items in the Enchantment Table

The player can place one or more items on the left part of the Enchantment Table. The number of Lapis Lazuli blocks to be spent on enchanting can be varied based on the level of enchantment. Higher levels of enchantment mean a greater number of blocks to be spent on the enchanting process. Hence, checking the lapis lazuli level and spending according to one’s needs. Do not spend unnecessarily high amounts if the enchantment level does not require it.

Selecting an Enchantment

Enchanted books and tools are obtained by enchanting them in an Enchantment Table or Anvil. The enchanting UI allows players to select 1-3 enchantments between which they can alternate or vary their application. The selection range is determined by the player’s level, with higher levels granting greater options.

Anvil enchanting allows players to apply an enchantment from an Enchanted Book to any item however they please and requires experience points most of the time as well as potentially an additional enchanted item depending on the combined impact.

The Anvil provides the player with the details about the impact a selected enchantment will have using an Edit window and Grindstone to select the enchantment. Desired enchantments are selected and deselected through the use of Lapis Lazuli.

Applying the Enchantment

Once you have your enchanting table with the necessary bookshelves, the next step is to add the item of armor, tool, or weapon that you want to enchant. To enchant, the item must be held in the player’s main hand, off-hand, or armor slot. Place the item and the lapis lazuli in the empty slots. To proceed, three random enchantments will display with a tooltip showing each enchantment’s cost in magic levels. This is where the player can either enchant or shuffle any of the three random enchantments at the cost of 1 magic level a shot until the desired enchantment appears.

What Are the Best Enchantments in Minecraft?

The best enchants in Minecraft are Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending, Sharpness V (for swords), and Efficiency V (for tools). These enchantments are the top picks for their respective tools and gear. Protection IV is mainly recommended to help protect against the game’s various sources of damage. Unbreaking III is recommended for most gear and tools, and Mending is fireplace recommended for gear. For offensive tools, Sharpness V is recommended and Efficiency V is recommended for tools.

Sharpness

Sharpness is the most commonly desired and easily obtained enchanted books, only able to be obtained from raid loot, dungeon loot, buried treasures, desert temples, trading with villagers, or fishing. Along with getting it from the books, it is a very common enchantment that occurs naturally. There are five power levels of the enchantment that give different amounts of damage bonus to different items. It can also be combined with Unbreaking and Mending to increase the durability and longevity of the weapon or tool.

Level I adds 1.25 points of extra damage, including 1.25 hearts of bonus damage to axes and swords. Levels II through V increase this to 1.5, 1.75, 2, and 2.25 points, 2.25, 2.75, 3.25, and 3.75 total points of damage per hit respectively.

To get the Sharpness I enchantment, build an enchanting table using 4 obsidian blocks, 2 diamonds, and 1 book, and surround it with bookshelves to increase the needed experience level (see “How to build an enchanting table setup”).

Protection

This is the enchantment that determines how much damage armor takes from attacks divided into percentages. The Protection and Fire Protection include both standard and advanced tiers of enchantment while Blast Protection and Projectile Protection offer individual tiers. Each tier offers a higher percentage of damage reduction than the one before it with tier IV offering an 80% reduction rate.

If the Armor enchantments are combined then the protection values are averaged, but never round down, to give the final protection. Protocols from the Minecraft Fandom provided an averaged ensemble of damage values. For example, with prot 4 added to a Prot II piece, you take 57.5% of damage.

There are no levels of protection damage reduction outside of armor to compare this to as the armor system inherently uses its own percentages. Armor protection has been from the game’s conception and was even found in creative survival during Indev. However, the enchantments were removed from the enchantment context and added as items in the 0.12.1 (MCPE) Pocket Edition.

Unbreaking

Unbreaking is an enchantment in Minecraft that affects the usage of a tool, weapon, or piece of armor. It has one of the most dramatic impacts of any enchantment, with higher levels causing a tool to significantly slow in wear and tear regardless of material while still under the effect of enchanting during use. Originally, this is what people want from Mending, but with it, players can continue to use a tool that although it is completely dead from the use of regular wear, has been over-repaired due to Mending up to a hundred times and is one continuing repair from breaking. The table below shows the impact of various levels of Unbreaking on the cost of repair of tools, weapons, and armor. This is the cost durability multiplier, meaning the number used to multiply the cost of a new tool to get the cost of the partially damaged tool.

Efficiency

Efficiency in Minecraft refers to reducing the costs of action. This means you can mine faster using less hunger, farm faster utilizing less land and replacement tools, and workstations and blocks faster with less material.

Enchanting picks with Efficiency is a common way to increase mining speed. Tools enchanted with Silk Touch preserve redstone, lapis, coal, diamond, emerald, and more when broken but do not receive any additional enchanted diamond drops. Though regular mining will yield more enchanted tools which can be combined using an anvil, this can be used to farm more diamonds to create additional pickaxes. Unbreaking and Mending are useful on pickaxes to extend their usage and repair them without needing materials.

Efficiency 5 pickaxe will take about 2 minutes 48 seconds to mine a double chest of stone vs. 11 minutes 24 seconds for an unenchanted diamond pickaxe. Unbreaking 3 means a diamond pickaxe will average 6 hours of mining vs. 1 and a half hours when unenchanted. Combining Mending and Unbreaking will allow you to mine forever without ever losing material. Thanks to all of these you will never over-eat, never have to replace tools, and can travel long distances quickly with a faster acting nether portal fueling enchantment.

Power

Power is a type of enchantment in Minecraft that can be applied to weapons, specifically bows and crossbows and books. Power can be shown as power i, power ii, or up to power v in the game.

Not all enchantment levels are available for the book enchantment since a book from the enchantment table usually offers varying levels of power between i and v. Power increases the fixed base damage of a bow by 25% of the base attack damage on level i and adds an additional 12.5% damage at each level up to a total of 100% the base damage on level v.
