What Are Lanterns in Fortnite?

Lanterns in Fortnite are a decorative lighting item introduced in Chapter 3 Season 1 that illuminate outdoor areas or underwater structures. They can be moved and repositioned to light different areas and can be lit using wood or paper. Picking up a glowing mushroom and throwing it towards the lantern will also light the lantern momentarily aside from launching the glowing mushroom, only wood. Aside from providing light, lanterns are purely aesthetic. They cannot be hung/removed to/from the roof or walls and are instantly destroyed by breaking the wooden base.

Lanterns were added on December 5th, 2022 to Fortnite in the v19.00 update. They are crafted using 5 paper or 5 wood. 5 resources are collected by mining structures and trees and breaking the resulting debris. When a player aims towards the debris collection point, an option to build with the resources that were collected appears. The player presses G (on the default PC controls), selects Lantern, and uses the left mouse button to confirm. Then the lantern will be in the player’s inventory and can be placed at any time by selecting it while holding the wall building option.

Why Light Lanterns in Fortnite?

Lighting lanterns in Fortnite is a fun, immersive gameplay mechanic that allows players to interact with the world of the game and earn extra XP without interrupting their regular gaming sessions. CITRON has the task of hanging 8 Chinese New Year lanterns in two locations around the map, and the lighting of these lanterns is a part of the task. Lighting all 8 lanterns us required to complete the mission he has received.

In past Fortnite seasons, lighting lanterns and pathways allowed one to see in the darkness. Now they are used to gain XP points and complete one of the Character Quests by completing quests. Lighting pathways and lanterns have been a part of Chapter 3 from Season 3 on, serving a purpose as a uniquely Fortnite way to transform the game map and fulfill a variety of character, seasonal, and gameplay purposes.

Where to Find Lanterns in Fortnite?

In Fortnite, you can find lanterns while wandering around the map. Although there is no fixed location for every single lantern, you can be guaranteed to find some by visiting map locations such as Lazy Lake, Pleasant Park, Holly Hedges, Misty Meadows, Retail Row, and most especially the Island in the Sun (a.k.a Boost Pad).

You can find the Island in the Sun to the southeast of The Fortilla and northeast of Dirty Docks. If you jump off toward the coast from this small sandy island, you should be able to spot some lanterns out and about on the beach. Alternatively, you could always just pay The Seven a visit and see if they’ve outfitted any of their new platforms with some lanterns. If you are really desperate you could always head to Tilted Towers, but be sure to keep a wary eye out for any lantern-seekers in the area.

How to Light Lanterns in Fortnite?

In Fortnite, to light luminous stone buildings, you need to interact with the building and spend 105 stone brick, 105 metal brick, and 105 wood resources to light it for 3 in-game days. These buildings have no particular advantages to them other than cosmetic effects in lighting up the building. This building is located in Lazy Lake, so it may be interesting to light it up in a low-population area for fun decorative lights.

Step 1: Find a Lantern

A Lantern is a tall decorative torch with a blue flame that generates a healing aura that boosts players who are within its range. These were happy accident (or disaster, depending on how you look at it) of making campfires dangerous. Campfires were released in Patch 12.20 on March 5th, 2020 as a new healing item, similar to a cozy campfire but with the added ability to burn structure pieces during the early days of Chapter 2, Season 2.

Step 2: Equip a Torch or Flame Bow

To light lanterns in Fortnite, you first have to have torch or flame bow. Torches are common items that can be found scattered throughout the map in various places. They can also be received as supplies from other players nearby. Once you get your hands on one, simply hold down one of the trigger buttons on your keyboard, console controller, or mobile device screen.

In the Chapter 3 No Build PvP game mode, all players are supplied a flame bow at the very start for free. To get lanterns and challenge towers lit quickly in lantern or light the flame objectives, use the flame bow for massive area lighting. When used with practice, players can easily light multiple lanterns with only one arrow.

Step 3: Approach the Lantern

After acquiring fireworks and putting on the show, you will have to approach the lantern to light it. Here are the example locations of all firework shows with a lantern in Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 6.

  1. Craggy Cliffs Lantern is at a small house with a backyard to the east of Craggy Cliffs on an island. The lonely house belongs to a rich family who installed a helipad out front for easy transport to town to purchase gourmet foods, wear fancy clothes, etc. When Fortnite players approach the lantern, they can shoot the three hanging orange cube-shaped lanterns to light the show. East 9 Universalis Map of Craggy shows the island’s exact position.
  2. Pleasant Park Lantern is in a suburban backyard to the south of Pleasant Park. When approaching the lantern, Fortnite players can use the nearby campfire to light the show. East 4 Loading Screen of Iron Man can be seen.

Kala, a creator of Described Video TV, guides how the main steps work in a real game of lighting the lantern in Fortnite in this video.

Step 4: Interact with the Lantern

After you have the lantern equipped, the final step to light the lanterns in Fortnite is to press the associated interaction button to release or ignite your lantern. On PCs, the default key bind to interact is E. On PS4 and PS5, the default key bind to interact is the action button x. On Xbox, the default key bind to interact is the action button A.

If equipping the Lantern with the initial steps does not work on Fortnite, there are three potential reasons why you may not be able to interact with or release your lantern.

  1. Your lantern may be glitched or bugged
  2. You may be in a game mode where the lantern is not enabled.
  3. You may be experiencing technical difficulties particular to your platform.

For your lantern not being able to interact with or be released due to being bugged, it is recommended to go back to the point in the game before you picked up the lantern and attempt to do so. This may require leaving your current game, the current Fortnite mode, or even restarting your client to get a functional version of the Lantern. They are able to be picked up and interact with at any time within the match so finding a new one will be relatively easier. Lanterns are not yet represented in the Playground LTM or Creative Mode.

What Happens After Lighting All Lanterns in Fortnite?

When you light all 10 lanterns in Fortnite, a massive player voting event called The Light of the Last Reality begins. With these lanterns lit, players can vote on the light they want to return to the Fortnite map.

Afterward, Kevin the Cube sends players to a brand new Fortnite island where they must vote on the color of the island. It then turns into The Escape castle where players can watch videos in the dining hall before awarded an exclusive umbrella called The Last Reality.

A leaked script from data mining did refer to an end date indicating that the event would be over after a certain timeframe after the last lantern was lit. That did not happen last time the event was triggered, so it remains unknown what will happen after the voting process is complete.

In November 2021, Epic Games announced the light will return and kicked off The Light Unleashed adventure via social media and hints within the game.

Unlocking the Lantern Skin

The lantern skin, titled from Asian mythology, can be unlocked through the Lamplight livestream event in Fortnite from December 7th, 2021. The lantern skin is a Sankaku member original design, and dynamic enough that it casts beautiful lighting. Paired with the right setting and music, this lighting evokes a sense of spirituality and other-worldliness.

If you are on at the right time and not in a rush, the winning entries for #FortniteLanterns (which happened daily from December 7-10 with winners announced at 6pm UTC) would receive the Lantern skin. Otherwise, try getting it in the Fortnite store by checking frequently.

A cosmetic item like the lantern skin has no influence on gameplay, as well as lighting your lantern in your UI after purchasing or unlocking the skin – but it’s all a bit of fun.

Earning XP and Rewards

Earning XP and rewards is an additional function of lighting lanterns in Fortnite. New seasonal objectives are now available through the Maps tab in the challenges page. As part of the Season 8 battle pass, players can earn additional Charcoal & Gold XP and Battle Stars by completing these objectives.

You can light Lanterns and other wares in Both Fortnite Creative Mode and Save the World Mode. In Save the World, […] open the […] Daily Quests, then complete a Quick Challenge based on the type of luminary you need to ignite. Using a lantern will fuel the progress of the save the world botanical boost altar, which will accumulate points from time to time after successful missions and subsequent successful challenges, in addition to granting charred gold points.

Tips for Lighting Lanterns in Fortnite

The best tip for lighting lanterns in Fortnite is to look on mountains close to the center of the island. On mountain ridges there are many lanterns in clusters. Land near a cluster or take them out from a distance as they are often destructible. You can tell which lanterns are a part of a group by their color. Their level of orange indicates whether they are in the same spot as others (very or faintly orange, not part of a group).

A side tip for lighting lanterns: grenades, rockets, and other explosives can quickly break multiple lanterns. Only the one you are directly damaging will register as complete. A useful piece of advice when you need to burn through many and can’t find any quickly.

Here is a more detailed strategy for burning through a lot of this will take the player around ten matches to complete so it is best if done over twenty days with one game a day. For each match only picking the goal of finding and lighting lanterns should make it easy to complete in around five matches.

  1. Solo: Battle Lab mode with island changed to random in game settings – approximately total 200 lanterns. 50 on the initial main island, with up to 12 on the small mountain east side. Go to random island and change islands between battles to get new lanterns. A good way to achieve the goal without anyone interfering with your completion of the task.
  2. Duos or Trios with limited combat – Choose a team mode and `Land far from the center of the bus` > Leave after you have completed second ring closes. This will give you some safety.

Use a Flame Bow for Long-Distance Lighting

The Flame Bow in Fortnite is an Exotic Weapon that supports do-it-yourself lighting of the lanterns. The Flame Bow is obtained only by finding and then defeating Grill Sergeant in Hamburger Hill, which is an Unremarkable Shack northeast of Stealthy Stronghold (E6) or possibly foraging in Coral Castle where it can be fished up using a Pro Fishing Rod. Its arrows when drawn back will light up and on firing anything they touch will burst into flames, including the lanterns you are intending to use for the The Light at the Outpost.

Team Up with Friends for Faster Progress

Teaming up with friends allows quicker lighting of lanterns as you can coordinate with your friends to accomplish tasks more quickly. The methods of completing quests are already made more efficient with groups using the same strategy.

Sparky Jacobs, experienced Fortnite enthusiast, mentions how important it is to have friends to resonate with while completing tasks. This eliminates the likelihood of your team completing the task before you do, and also allows quicker task completion as one won’t have to adjust going from group to solo play.

Meaning that groups sticking together while competing missions will accomplish missions quicker than a single group going off solo. Your accumulated quest progress carries over from match to match so if you are teamed up with your friends your progress will accumulate more quickly and you will find the lighting process quicker.

Look for Lanterns in High-Traffic Areas

Because they are so spread out all over the island, no location is a sure bet for finding the Fortnite Lanterns. The city of Craggy Cliffs in the game’s northwest usually contains them. If you survive the beginning phase of the game by landing in the city, glancing around the rooftops or in buildings at ground level should give a good idea if there are any lanterns present.

Lazy Lake can sometimes have lanterns on a bridge that you have to quickly cross in chapter 4. Other locations such as the Authority have a rarity that will enable players to find several lanterns if they have the patience to go on a more extensive search. The Yacht landmark atop these mountains further to the east will also sometimes reveal lanterns if one takes time to explore the building.

Conclusion

These are the main points to know about using the lantern tool in Fortnite. The lantern tool cannot be used independently of the torch feature of Doctor Sloane’s organization and cannot be found in the inventory. The lantern will be used to quickly travel to different parts of the Fortnite island where the torches are lit, enabling players to complete their quest quickly without having to use vehicles for transport.

The lantern lasts for 30 seconds and needs to be found once again keys and a tool of convenience to have a better playing and navigation experience. To use the lantern tool, you must have the torch feature unlocked, which cannot be done on all versions from Chapter 2 or earlier. The lantern tool is the same as the torch tool, with no unique differences aside from its name.

Varies by version, but generally by accessing Doctor Sloane and her quests, players can unlock the torch and thus the lantern to use for exploring parts of the Fortnite island.

The Fortography feature in v18.50 allows users to submit their best shots of using the torch and lantern tool in Fortnite.
